Since the 1960s, science educators have agreed that a major stumbling block to learning science is misconceptions about natural phenomenon. In spite of this awareness, it is rare that science curricula are designed to address and change student misconceptions. In this session, you will become acquainted with some of the research on science misconceptions, find out how to identify common student misconceptions, and learn about some strategies to address student misconceptions.

Mapping Culture: Organizing for Action (ROOM 511)

This presentation includes an overview for using culture maps in different environments, an opportunity for participants to map out how various cultures are reflected at Coconino Community College, and a discussion of how these maps can be applied to various disciplines.

The SafeZONE general education workshop is designed to introduce participants to the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) people. This workshop will introduce definitions related to sexual orientation and gender identity, address homophobia and heterosexism, and dispel myths and misunderstandings about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identities and communities. This workshop is a prerequisite for the Ally Development Workshop. Participants who complete this session will receive a SafeZONE button.

This workshop will focus on ways to save money on utility bills by increasing energy efficiency at home through participation in the City of Flagstaff's Residential Energy Retrofit Program. Residential Energy Retrofit Program services include energy and water conservation measures as well as education and guidance for additional measures that can improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Disability Resources, Passages, and TRiO will briefly present individual programs and specific strategies used to meet the needs of our diverse student population. Addressing needs of underrepresented populations such as single parents, displaced homemakers, first generation, low socioeconomic status, and students with disabilities.

Using Library Resources – An Introduction for Faculty and Staff (ROOM 459)

Este will review the current online databases available for all members of the CCC community, provide an overview of services available at NAU’s Cline Library, and review basics of plagiarism and citation management. Este will provide some ideas for using library resources in the classroom. Come prepared with some search topics for hands on database searching.

Come join our CCC panel of English instructors as we share our teaching experiences. We have invited GTA's from NAU's composition program to join us. Our panel will answer questions and encourage everyone to share their own perspectives on what it is like to teach at a community college. All disciplines are welcome. We will discuss our strategies, tips and challenges when teaching at a community college.

Advising for CCC2NAU: How to Guide Our Students (ROOM 459)

The collaborative efforts of the CCC2NAU Program and CCC’s advising structures are to prepare CCC students to meet their CCC educational goals and seamless transfer to and immersion in their respective NAU baccalaureate degree. Learn about the integrative efforts of the CCC2NAU Program and CCC advising structures to provide degree selection and focus, accurate course selection, a prepared transition to NAU and increased graduation rates for both institutions. Objectives for this workshop are to educate CCC employees about integration of CCC and CCC2NAU advising structures, CCC2NAU philosophy, pragmatism and program intent, and strengthening of CCC staff and instructors as referral agents.
