Northern Arizona children will enjoy the opportunity to experience a slice of college as part of Coconino Community College's summer Kids College, thanks to a generous grant from the Page/Lake Powell Community Foundation.

The foundation awarded CCC's Page campus $2,700 for its 2013 Kids College for children ages 10-14. The money will provide scholarships for students and be used to buy supplies.

"We hear so much about the camp throughout the year," said Jane Ward, CCC's Educational Services Coordinator at the Page campus. "It keeps the students from forgetting what they learned during the school year and reinforces their learning."

Since 2000, CCC has sponsored Kids College, where a paid instructor works with the children, one week at a time on different subjects. This year, the first week's theme was watercolor painting. The second week included learning about the ecosystem of Lake Powell and the final week was focused on physical fitness, where the students created obstacle courses based on popular video games.

"Throughout each week, there was a lecture portion, a hands-on activity, an art project and writing in a journal at least one a day," Ward said.

Each week of camp costs $75 per student, of which the student's family is asked to pay $25. The grant will used to offset that cost for more students. This year, a total of 40 students participated throughout the different weeklong sessions.
